Pattern for a 3-dimensional Flamingo, a long-legged wading bird.

Designed to stand with his wings out to show off his lovely black flight feathers.

Detailed instructions including word charts, detail diagrams, and photographs illustrating progress along the way.

29 pages, including the cover.

Sized for 15/0 OR 11/0 Miyuki round seed beads. Not tested for other brands of seed beads which may have a different length to width ratio which can distort the pattern slightly. Cylinder beads like Delicas will not work because of the curved surfaces and will greatly distort the shape of the Flamingo because of their squarer shape.

7 colors of 15/0 or 11/0 round seed beads, plus one color of 11/0 (if using 15/0) or 8/0 (if using 11/0) for the toes. Approximately 13,700 beads total. Colors numbers (Miyuki) are given for making your flamingo in either pink or peach colors.

Round black opaque glass beads for the eyes: 3 mm for 15/0, or 4 mm for 11/0

Legs and wings use wire to allow the bird to stand with some adjustment for balance, and to hold his wings out without drooping. No foam ball is required.

For easier assembly, the legs and wings are made separately and then joined to the body.

Skills needed: Peyote stitch in the round, stepping up at the end of rows, plus flat peyote stitch in even and odd count, ladder stitch, and herringbone stitch. Ability to follow a detailed word chart.

Sizes appear very large but remember that more than half the height is taken up by the long legs. The bird itself is not any larger than my other birds. Finished size when made in 15/0 Miyuki round seed beads: approximately 9" (23 cm) tall and 9" (23 cm) wingspan. OR Approximately 12" (30.5 cm) tall with 12" (30.5 cm) wingspan when made in 11/0 Miyuki round seed beads. Life-size is much larger.

This is a detailed complex pattern that requires close attention to increases and decreases to maintain the shape.

The word chart is much more detailed than usual to keep the shape going perfectly.
